OVERVIEW AND METHODOLOGIES OF THE ITS SAFETY EVALUATION PROCESS

An important component of intelligent transportation is safety. Much has been written about this significant factor and how new surface transportation technology can reduce the risk of accident. There are, however, difficult problems related to safety. The author identifies these in some detail and notes that safety evaluations should occur both at the design stage and after production. One conclusion: research is needed to improve the ability to predict safety risk on the basis of driver performance.
