THINKING LIKE A SYSTEM: SUSTAINABILITY THROUGH TRANSPORTATION TECHNOLOGY

No one will deny that Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) can have a significant role in the development of sustainable communities. But the task will not be easy. The author makes a case for devising a goal framework, complete with examples of technologies that support sustainability. Beyond that lies the greater challenge of reconstructing the transportation system to make it work better which, among other things, means shifting from building to management. The author concludes by offering three ideas on how to transform the concept of sustainability into an action agenda for ITS.
