REPORT OF THE MEETING ON 25 JANUARY 1995: DESIGN OF TUNNELS IN LONDON CLAY USING SPRAYED CONCRETE AS PRIMARY SUPPORT

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) sponsored a meeting at the Institution of Civil Engineers to review elements of design contributing to the safe use of sprayed concrete as the primary support for tunnels constructed in London clay, following the collapse at Heathrow airport. The meeting covered: the basis for tunnel design; settlement and compensation grouting; sprayed concrete (shotcrete) support; and instrumentation. Conclusions from the meeting are briefly presented here.
