ECONOMICS OF NATURAL GAS AS A VEHICLE FUEL
The major purpose in this report is to identify the economic factors likely to affect the extent of substitution to natural gas in Australian road transport over the short to medium term. The question of whether there is a case for encouraging such substitution is also considered. Factors influencing the demand and supply of natural gas as a vehicle fuel are examined in chapter 2. Detailed attention is given to the particularly important influences of fuel taxes, refuelling infrastructure and technical developments. Factors that may justify further incentives for switching to natural gas - particularly the external environmental effects of different fuels - are analysed in chapter 3. The various types of incentive that either are or might be employed are also briefly examined. (a)
