EMERGING CONCEPTS AND PRODUCTS FOR INTELLIGENT TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS. ITS-IDEA PROGRAM ANNUAL PROGRESS REPORT 2

This report presents a summary of technical projects conducted during the second program year of the Innovations Deserving Exploratory Analysis (IDEA) Program for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). The ITS-IDEA Program is jointly supported by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and is managed by the National Research Council's Transportation Research Board (TRB). Section 1 of this report summarizes progress on projects initiated during the first program year, including those that have been completed during the second program year. Section 2 summarizes new starts that were initiated during the second program year, several of which are at initial stages of commencing project activities. Appendix 1 contains summary lists of ITS-, NCHRP-, and TRANSIT-IDEA projects. Appendix 2 contains the ITS-IDEA program announcement released by TRB in January 1995 and the Request for Proposals on Advanced Rail Technologies dated June 1995. The ITS-IDEA Program added the new program component that supports projects on ITS applications for the development and deployment of advanced rail system technologies, including high speed rail systems, during 1995.
