USING GIS FOR TRANSPORTATION PLANNING: A HOUSTON EXPERIENCE

Given the ever increasing local responsibilities and the data intensive mandates, the Houston-Galveston Area Council (H-GAC), as the Houston area MPO, and the Houston District Advanced Planning Section of the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) are turning to Geographical Information Systems (GIS) with growing frequency. GIS provides a good medium to integrate historically aggregate transportation information necessary to meet the CAAA and ISTEA deadlines. Together, the local efforts of H-GAC and TxDOT are yielding GIS solutions to transportation planning problems.
