IMPLEMENTATION OF OPERATING STRATEGIES FOR INTEGRATED FREEWAY/ARTERIAL CONTROL SYSTEMS

This paper presents implementation of the system operating strategies, developed for the coordinated operation of ramp metering and arterial traffic signal systems. For an integration system capable of interfacing with both freeway ramp control and arterial traffic signal control systems, a conceptual design was proposed to provide guidelines for selection and implementation of the appropriate strategies and control tactics. The implementation study of the operating strategies at a selected real-world corridor provided useful information regarding the hardware and software requirements for the integration system. The results could be applicable to most of the existing corridors within the United States.
