BICYCLE TRAFFIC ENGINEERING. WHAT EVERY TRAFFIC ENGINEER SHOULD KNOW

This paper briefly presents the status of the bicycle in current transportation policy. It describes the traditional approach to design of bicycle facilities. For the most part, however, it addresses the traffic engineering practices that most affect bicyclists. To keep up with the new focus on the bicycle for transportation, Bicycle Traffic Engineering must also change. Existing gaps and limitations in traditional planning practices have been exposed by a larger, more vocal group of bicycle commuters.
