A CRITICAL LOOK AT ROUNDABOUTS

This paper examines the feasibility and operational characteristics of roundabouts (small central island, from 80 to 120 feet in diameter) in place of signalized or stop controlled intersections. The Maryland State Highway Administration is currently evaluating the operational characteristics of one roundabout that has been installed at an intersection in its highway system. The conclusion of the preliminary findings are presented in this paper.
