INTELLIGENT HIGHWAYS
There are many strategies for dealing with traffic congestion, including ridesharing and demand management. The greatest promise, however, lies in technology-based solutions and the strategies they will support. And the technological solution with the greatest potential for reducing congestion is ITS: intelligent transportation systems. There are three major categories of ITS technologies: traffic management and travel information systems, tracking and transaction systems, and enhanced vehicles. Among the ITS technologies, traffic management and travel information systems hold the most promise for cutting traffic congestion over the near term. In fact, Secretary Federico Pena has announced a new DOT initiative, the Intelligent Transportation Infrastructure (ITI), to spur deployment of the first generation of these technologies on a national basis.
