This article reports on the worldwide response to the U.S. certification of a new automated explosive screening system -- and why some believe it is not the ultimate answer. A new effort is underway in the wake of the FAA's December 1994 certification of a system from InVision Technologies Inc. Within days of that announcement, InVision had systems installed and running at Brussels International Airport's new terminal and at Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion Airport. The Belgium Airport & Airways Agency (BAAA) was the first sale of the CTX 5000 Automatic Explosives Detection System; the Israelis leased their unit following tests at Tel Aviv and at InVision's facilities in Foster City, California.
