One way to cut congestion at airports is to do away with tickets. This article reports on the ways in which airlines are beginning to eliminate the need for passenger tickets. The most advanced of these is the 'smart card' currently being pioneered by Lufthansa in Europe and Delta in the U.S. The main benefit of the card is that it will allow passengers to book flights over the phone and, on arrival at the airport, the ChipCard is simply passed over a Lufthansa Chip-in-Terminal where a voucher giving details of gate, boarding time and seat number if issued. When boarding, passengers pass the card over another reader which admits them onto the aircraft.
