THE TRANSPORTATION MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATION - A NEW VEHICLE FOR MUNICIPAL TRAFFIC ENGINEERING?

In Massachusetts, of 158 communities with a population of more than 10,000 people, only nine municipalities have a traffic engineer or traffic engineering department. In these nine communities, it has typically been an annual struggle to retain staffing, stature or both. Unfortunately, complex traffic problems are not being addressed as extensively as would be expected, due to the lack of traffic engineering expertise available to the communities. One option being explored to solve this dilemma in several regions of Massachusetts is expanding the role of the private transportation management association (TMA) to include funding and/or staffing with traffic engineering expertise.
