SOLUTIONS TO TRAFFIC CONGESTION PROBLEMS ON A MAIN VIADUCT IN RIYADH

This report describes Ministry of Communications efforts to reduce traffic congestion at a critical interchange in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The three level interchange, referred to as the Petromin Roundabout, is located at the intersection of Makkah Road, a freeway facility and Old Airport Street, a major urban boulevard. Due to the physical nature of the Roundabout, only limited improvements could be made at the critical point of traffic congestion. This led to a study of the surrounding area, and to a series of physical improvements designed to divert traffic from the Roundabout.
