A SYSTEMS APPROACH TO FREEWAY DESIGN
This paper provides a descriptive framework for a systems approach to overall freeway design. A systematic comprehensive approach is advocated due to the significant reinvestment being made in freeway modifications and rehabilitation efforts. Currently, required procedures exist in several forms. The following discussion specifically examines previous system analysis procedures and provides a construct for a comprehensive analysis procedure to accommodate the interactions between the various components. A checklist of objectives/action steps and graphical examples of the geometric and operational parameters essential for a comprehensive evaluation are briefly described.
