VIDEO, DIGITAL IMAGING, AND AN AUTOMATIC VEHICLE CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM

In this paper the author first describes a video-based automatic vehicle classification system (AVCS), and then presents a proposal for the design of an original inexpensive video device for widespread use in IVHS. This proposed video device will combine several existing and new machine vision and information transmission techniques to exploit the properties of video and the visual spectrum in a uniquely practical manner for IVHS, as described in this paper. The AVCS monitored a road with a video camera and personal computer equipped with a digitizing board. It provides vehicle count, speed, and detailed classification. Vehicle classification is based on a number of parameters such as length, height, various profile characteristics, and axle counts.
