TRAVEL-TIME MEASUREMENT AND PROVISION SYSTEM USING AVI UNITS
To drivers, the most important and useful information is the time required for them to travel from one point to another on any ordinary road, national highway, or expressway. This paper describes a system to measure and provide travel-time information. In the system, automatic vehicle identification (AVI) units have been installed at two points on a road to obtain the number plate information of each traveling vehicle, from which the required travel time in the roadway section between the two points is measured. The system uses a CCD camera to photograph the number plate of a vehicle passing through each measuring point as well as image processing technology for final number plate recognition. Before providing travel-time information to drivers, the system predicts a required travel time using database information on historical travel-time data.
