OPERATION OF TRAFFIC MONITORING TV CAMERAS THROUGH ISDN LINES

In Yamanashi Prefecture, the Chuo Expressway cuts through a mountainous resort area. Traffic accidents on the expressway cause heavy traffic jams in many parts of the prefecture. Resorts in the area attract people from the Tokyo Metropolitan area on weekends, holidays, and other tourist seasons, leading to severe traffic congestion. The resultant concentration of traffic information inquiries on the sight-seeing places along the Chuo Expressway and national highways prompted the establishment of a traffic information service system to meet the traffic information needs of drivers in real time. Television cameras were installed to monitor traffic on the Chuo Expressway and national highways leading to sight-seeing destinations. This installation helped to increase the area over which traffic information can be collected and to strengthen the collection and provision of traffic information. The new traffic information service system provides simplified moving images of real-time traffic information on remote moutainous roads, and helps to distribute and guide traffic flow in an optimum manner and to prevent traffic accidents. These benefilts are achieved with sizable savings in necessary telecommunication line costs.
