STATISTICAL SAMPLE SIZE FOR CONSTRUCTION OF SOIL LINERS. DISCUSSION AND CLOSURE

A discussion of a paper with the aforementioned title by Benson, Zhai, and Rashad, published in this journal (Volume 120, Number 10, October 1994), is presented. Discussers Donald and McBean comment on the use of "soft" data due to the limitations in measuring hydraulic conductivity. Also at issue is "equivalent" hydraulic conductivity, which the discussers state is influenced by boundary conditions, rendering a stochastic model inapplicable. Donald and McBean also believe that the range in variance is too narrow. The discussers offer their analyses of field sampling as support to the lack of correlation structure of hydraulic conductivity. Discussion is followed by closure from the authors.
