BEARING CAPACITY OF SHALLOW FOUNDATIONS ON NONCOHESIVE SOILS. DISCUSSIONS AND CLOSURE

Two discussions of a paper with the aforementioned title by Bohdan Zadroga, published in this journal (Volume 120, Number 11, November 1994), are presented. Discusser Ghaly remarks that discrepancies between results of experimental studies (this one and others) will persist until an important parameter, such as stress structure within the soil, is accounted for in bearing capacity calculation. Ghaly also reports that criteria for classifying methods of bearing capacity calculation are absent. The second discussion focuses on the assumptions used to compare calculated and observed behavior of the limit equilibrium capacity of small footing tests. Discussers Lutenegger and Adams question the ability of granular soils to be cohesive and suggest that an exercise to isolate and identify the actual sources of error between analyses and observations to be more practical. Discussions are followed by closure from the author.
