UNIFIED FORMULATION FOR ANALYSIS OF SLOPES WITH GENERAL SLIP SURFACE. DISCUSSIONS AND CLOSURE

Two discussions of a paper with the aforementioned title by Espinoza, Bourdeau, and Muhunthan, published in this journal (Volume 120, Number 7, July 1994), are presented. The first discussion focuses on moment equilibrium conditions and the line of thrust. Discusser Sharma believes it incorrect to presume a thrust line that is parallel to the shear surface. Sharma also discusses the reasonableness of the reported safety factors and implementation of Janbu's method. The second discussion centers on the variation of computed factors of safety and the practical implications. Discussers Wright and Duncan also comment specifically on case 6 of example 2, attributing the unusually large value of safety factor to the fact that an arbitrary slip surface with a steep slope at the toe was used in the analysis. Discussions are followed by closure from the authors.
