CHICAGO TRANSIT AUTHORITY TAKES ON LEAD ABATEMENT OF GREEN LINE

A 40-km (25-mi) stretch of 90-year-old transit rail is being rehabilitated by three coatings contractors in Chicago. The rehabilitation of the Chicago Transit Authority's Green Line includes removal of deteriorated lead-based coatings via blasting, replacement of numerous corroded or deteriorated spans and footings, and overall painting. This article outlines the four phases of the project, describes the containment system assembled for lead abatement activities, and reports on cost and manpower requirements of the project.
