BACK TO THE FUTURE OF MOTORLESS TRAVEL

This article describes guidelines that were devised to better plan, design, and implement bicycle and pedestrian facilities in Texas. A directive from the Texas Department of Transportation mandates the accommodation of bicycle and pedestrian traffic on all projects, including those under construction where possible. The document is based on best practices, but is geared to Texas conditions. The guide can be used to determine the economic feasibility of different types of bicycle facilities under varying roadway conditions. A sidebar highlights the characteristics of the most successful bicycle facilities.
