TESTING LOW VOC COATING IN AGGRESSIVE ENVIRONMENTS: NORTH CAROLINA'S EXPERIENCE

The William B. Umstead Bridge on United States (U.S.) Route 64/264 is the perfect testing laboratory for various coating technologies. The two-lane, 4,279-m structure over the Croatan Sound is the primary link from the coastal town of Manns Harbor, North Carolina, to Roanoke Island, the town of Manteo, and the outer banks of North Carolina. The bridge's four steel beams supporting 312 concrete deck sections are exposed to an aggressive environment, which the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) frequently uses for coating evaluation purposes. This article summarizes the selection, application, and evaluation of coatings on two spans of the Umstead Bridge and on two beams at the nearby NCDOT ferry maintenance facility in Manns Harbor, North Carolina, in 1992.
