ROLLING RESISTANCE CHARACTERISTICS OF NEW ZEALAND ROAD SURFACES

This brief article describes a research experiment in New Zealand that examined rolling resistance and its influence on fuel consumption. Generally, for a car, a 20 percent reduction in tire rolling resistance will reduce fuel consumption by about 4 percent. Experimental results indicate that pavement macrotexture (a surface characteristic affecting rolling resistance) is as important as pavement roughness in influencing fuel consumption of cars and both factors must be considered in pavement design.
