COMMUNICATIONS AND SUPPORT FOR TRAFFIC CONTROLLER OPERATIONS USES THE PEGASUS FRONT END PROCESSOR

The Front End Processor (FEP) is a basic unit in the communications and network structure of a Traffic Management System architecture. It provides the interface between field equipment such as traffic controllers and traffic management and operations systems. The PEGASUS FEP was designed to provide a simple, reliable, modular, and expandable communications system using off the shelf hardware and software components. This paper: discusses the basic FEP requirements, the FEP hardware architecture and the software architecture; provides an overview of the Remote Procedure Call interface used by the FEP; describes the Publish/Subscribe interface used for reporting information to other components of the Traffic Management System; describes the cost and performance of the current FEP implementation; and provides a summary of the current status of the Pegasus FEP project.
