WORKPLACE TRANSPORT SAFETY. GUIDANCE FOR EMPLOYERS

This publication provides practical guidance and references to relevant literature, to help those concerned with all workplace transport to secure a safe workplace and safe working practices, and to comply with the law in the UK. It is intended for owners, employers and managers of haulage firms and of those responsible for workplaces using any form of transport; it will also be useful to supervisors, employees, safety representatives, and self-employed people. The main areas of guidance covered are: (1) assessing the risks associated with workplace transport activities; (2) organising for safety at a workplace, and promoting a safety culture there; (3) securing a safe workplace and safe vehicles, and ensuring safe driver behaviour; and (4) establishing safe working practices for specific activities involving vehicles. Many examples of safe working practices are described. There is a checklist to indicate areas that employers should examine when: (1) trying to identify hazards associated with vehicle activities; and (2) assessing the adequacy of existing precautions. UK legislation applicable to transport safety is listed.
