THE ACHIEVEMENT OF SKIDDING CHARACTERISTICS FOR ROAD PAVEMENTS. VOLUME 1: AN OVERVIEW

The report presents the results of a study by the CSS Surface Characteristics Task Group, set up by the County Surveyors Society's Engineering Committee. The Group's terms of reference were to produce: (1) design guidance to ensure the achievement of the required skidding characteristics on a road surface; (2) guidance to enable roadstones to be specified to satisfy these requirements; (3) guidance on requirements for texture depth on the county road network; and (4) interim guidance on methods of measuring skid resistance. The report includes the questionnaire on surface characteristics of roads, sent to counties in England and Wales, and summarises the answers of the 36 counties which responded. It also summarises the results of questionnaires sent to local authorities, according to their policies on modifying polished stone values (PSVs) and their texture depth requirements. It includes some definitions, and covers: (1) policy for the road surface; (2) policy for the specification to implement a client's wishes; (3) measurement of surface layer properties; and (4) current PSVs for aggregates in UK roads. It finally gives some recommendations on skidding resistance, texture, noise, and spray.
