THE SELECTION OF PORTLAND CEMENTS TO BRITISH STANDARDS AND TO EUROPEAN PRESTANDARD ENV 197-1

This note provides simple guidance on the selection of Portland cements for specific aspects of concrete performance, and shows the equivalence of cements in British Standards to those in the European Prestandard BSI DD ENV 197-1 Part 1: Common cements. A European Prestandard (an ENV) is like a British Standards Institution (BSI) Draft for Development, and does not require the withdrawal of national standards covering the same subject. To facilitate the selection of the appropriate cement types, recommendations are presented for specific aspects of concrete performance: (1) types of cement; (2) constituents of cement; and (3) standard strength classes of cements. British and European systems of naming cements are compared in a table, that shows their broad equivalence and compositional ranges; DD ENV 197-1 includes the compositional range of all current British cements. Another table lists cements recommended as suitable for various exposure conditions. Details are given of the safe handling of both dry and wet cements.
