The existing level of technology can produce an electric vehicle (EV) in compliance with 1976 safety standards, with 2 or 4 passenger capacity, baggage capacity of 100-200 lbs., heater and radio. The performance specifications and costs are also indicated. The (EVI) is basically assembly-oriented and must rely on innovative outside suppliers to provide the necessary electrical and mechanical components. The reasons why EVI provides unique opportunities for outside suppliers are listed. The supplier must make a systematic assessment of the market, asses the political, economic, technological, energy, and environmental forces that will stimulate the acceptance of the electric vehicle. He must then cooperate with and make a commitment to EVI. The technological needs of the EVI are summarized. These needs relate to: battery technology, mechanical components (transmission etc.) electric motors, electronic devices, tires, light weight materials (for body and interior) and hardware (bumpers etc.).
