DESIGN AND BUILD - LESSONS FROM THE UK CHANNEL TUNNEL TERMINAL

The 10 billion pound Channel Tunnel project was procured by Eurotunnel under one of the world's largest and fastest design and build contracts. The main contractor - Transmanche Link - had to cope with constantly changing operational, cost and quality requirements and yet still deliver an acceptable standard of design. This problem was particularly acute at the environmentally sensitive UK terminal site, where more than 17 professional disciplines were involved. This paper records some of the design and management issues raised by the scale, process and pace of the project and concludes with a series of recommendations for major design and build projects of the future.
