SHOPMOBILITY GOOD FOR PEOPLE AND TOWNS
This article briefly describes the UK-wide Shopmobility schemes, and outlines the results of some research on ten of them. A typical Shopmobility shop or office with accessible parking is equipped with aids to mobility, and has staff who can advise and assist customers. Shopmobility can be used by any person of any age with permanent or temporary mobility impairment. The Automobile Association (AA) commissioned market research consulatants to interview 196 customers, almost all of whom had pemranent disabilities. Nearly 75% of the customers (of whom a third were passengers) arrived by car, and about 20% by taxi. 62% of them lived within 5 miles of the scheme, another 25% within 10 miles, and another 10% within 20 miles. Ease of access to the scheme and to central shops was found most important, and the proximity of public transport was also important. Shopmobility should be part of a wider package serving the mobility and access needs of disabled people.
