THE ROLE OF A KNOWLEDGE-BASED SYSTEM IN INTERPRETING GEOTECHNICAL INFORMATION
A knowledge-based (expert) system is described which can be used to assist with the interpretation of geotechnical data. It can help a geotechnical specialist with the processing of raw site investigation data to arrive at interpreted design parameters and a model of the ground conditions. The role of the system and its potential users are discussed. It is argued that such systems can provide an integrating link between existing software packages by filling a gap in computer- aided geotechnical design. (A)
