POLICY AND MANAGEMENT OF THE LOCAL AUTHORITY BRIDGE STOCK. HOW CONCRETE BRIDGES FIT IN

The author considers some of the factors to be taken into consideration in managing the maintenence of the local authority bridge stock. The purpose of maintenance is examined and whole life costing discussed. Design decisions taken at an early stage are discussed. The performance of invisible substructure elements is considered. A check list is provided of decisions to be taken by the client in preparing a design brief. The implications for whole life costing are indicated.
