EFFICIENCY MEASURING WITH DATA ENVELOPMENT ANALYSIS (DEA); EXAMPLE FROM THE TRUCKING INDUSTRY

EFFEKTIVITETSMAALING MED DATAOMHYLLINGSANALYSE (DEA); EKSEMPEL FRA LASTEBILTRANSPORT

DEA (data envelopment analysis) applied to data from the Norwegian Truck Cost Survey 1988 indicates that there is a potential for efficiency gains in distant distribution by truck. Nearly 40 per cent reduction in input per unit of output should be possible if all trucks not only got rid of the technical inefficiency, but also produced in the optimal scale. It turns out that optimal scale for the average unit means that it augments its capacity kilometres by 150 per cent. On the other hand, it is difficult to say whether it is economically meaningful to exploit so much of this potential. The reason is that the Truck Cost Survey does not contain data on transported volumes. The indicator of production used in the study at hand has therefore been capacity kilometres, giving a very incomplete picture of the transportation tasks of the production units.(A)
