ESTIMATING 1-DIMENSIONAL CONSOLIDATION, INCLUDING SECONDARY COMPRESSION, OF CLAY LOADED FROM OVERCONSOLIDATED TO NORMALLY CONSOLIDATED STATE

The estimation is described of the rate and magnitude of the settlement that will occur, including recompression, virgin compression and secondary compression when a large shallow foundation is placed at a site underlain by saturated clay. The details of the problem are described. The solution outlined here assumes that primary and secondary effects can arbitrarily be separated. Primary consolidation can be predicted from Terzaghi's 1-dimensional consolidation theory or extensions of his theory. The assumptions are listed for a working hypothesis of secondary compression for engineering practice in which the load increment ratio is a sufficient magnitude to cause some primary consolidation. Behavior resulting from the working hypothesis is illustrated in a figure. Comments are made on the test apparatus and procedures, and the evaluation of individual test results is discussed. The evaluation of overall soil properties (amount of primary settlement, rate of primary settlement, rate of secondary compression, and combined primary and secondary compression) is also discussed.
