PORTS: A THESIS FOR THE NEW COMMERCIAL PORT IN MARGHERA

PORTI: UNA TESI PER IL NUOVO PORTO COMMERCIALE DI MARGHERA

A THESIS DISCUSSED AT THE ISTITUTO UNIVERSITARIO IN VENICE IS AN OCCASION FOR FOCUSING ON THE LONG AND COMPLEX READJUSTMENT OF THE VENETIAN PORTS, AND THE COMMERCIAL ONE IN PARTICULAR. STUDYING THE PORT AREA IN MARGHERA IS NOT AN EASY TASK BECAUSE OF THE COMPLEXITY OF THE PRESENT ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL PHENOMENA. ONE FACES, IN FACT, VARIABLES OF A FAR TOO FLUCTUATING NATURE THAT ARE DIFFICULT TO REDUCE TO A DATA UNIT. ONE MUST THEREFORE TRY TO REDUCE THE PROBLEMS TO BE CONSIDERED. SO, ONE MUST START FROM A VERY SIMPLE HYPOTHESIS: MOVE THE MAIN COMMERCIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE MARGHERA PORT, PRESENTLY SITUATED IN THE MARINE STATION OF VENICE, TO PIERS "A" AND "B"; DESPITE THE FACT THAT THE PREVAILING POLITICAL PROPOSAL IN VENICE (THE MOST VARIABLE DATA ) ARE LOOKING TOWARDS THE BUILDING OF A NEW COMMERCIAL COMPLEX AT THE "A" CASSA IN THE SOUTHERN PART OF THE LAGOON. THE PROPOSAL FOR THE BUILDING OF THE PORT IN MARGHERA SEEMS REASONABLE FOR MORE THAN ONE REASON. ON THE ONE HAND, VENICE'S NEED TO HAVE A PORT STRUCTURE OF RATIONAL AND NOT OVERLARGE DIMENSIONS TOGETHER WITH A FEASIBILITY INDEX BETWEEN SHORT AND AND MEDIUM TERM; AND ON THE OTHER HAND, THE ENVIROMENTAL IMPACT IS NOT AS STRONG AS IT WOULD BE WITH CASSA "A" WHICH PLACED AS IT IS AT BRENTA OUTLET REPRESENTS A FURTHER WORSENING OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL SITUATION IN THE LAGOON.
