TIMETABLING FOR TOMORROW: AN AGENDA FOR PUBLIC TRANSPORT IN AUSTRALIA

This report examines urban public transport issues and trends from a variety of perspectives, and reviews current policy responses both in Australia and overseas. It proposes a way forward linking area-wide strategic planning, similar to the area strategy approach of the Building Better Cities Program, with wider and more flexible infrastructure planning, especially in transport. This approach would focus on achieving agreed outcomes, and would also allow the impact of urban development or redevelopment on our environment to be better managed. The report proposes directions for change in government policy on public transport to achieve Commonwealth objectives of economic efficiency, environmental sustainability and social equity. (a)
