The first two chapters of the book provide an introduction to concrete roads and bridges, the alkali-aggregate reaction, concrete aggregates and cement. These chapters provide the definitions and descriptions that form the essential basis for understanding the material in the rest of the book. The main core of the book comprises Chapters 3 and 4 which describe and discuss the occurrence of the alkali-aggregate reaction in concrete roads and highway bridges. Chapter 5 deals with the important matter of the structural effect of alkali-aggregate reaction: a subject that is of more serious consequence for bridges than for roads. Practical guidance on methods used for the identification of alkali-aggregate reaction in concrete roads and bridges is given in Chapter 6. The next chapter covers methods of preventing the reaction in new construction, while Chapter 8 deals with the closely associated subjects of specification and testing. The book concludes by giving advice on the management of concrete roads and highway bridges in which alkali-aggregate reaction has been identified but which have to continue to give service. (A)
