VISUALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: APPLICATION AND PURPOSE IN THE PUBLIC FORUM

The use of aerial photographs, maps and engineering drawings have served the transportation industry well in the transfer of design information to the construction segment. The general public, however, is poorly equipped to comprehend the symbolic nature of these forms of graphic communication. In the last few years, a new set of communication techniques, generally referred to as visualization, has been applied to various communication problems in the transportation industry. Because the application of these techniques is still in its infancy, the use, benefits and pitfalls of visualization processes is poorly understood. The purpose of this paper is to define the issues, problems, technologies and benefits related to the application of visualization in the transportation industry.
