THE USE AND MISUSE OF SIMPLIFIED APPROACHES IN TRAVEL FORECASTING

It is argued that, at the present time, techniques are no longer the main target of simplification but the ease of the use of packages which need to be simplified and made user-friendly. Various dimension of simplification are discussed. It was concluded that simplifying to a certain degree is required to achieve modelling objectives. That applies both to complex urban areas as well as simpler ones. The choice of the level of complexity of a model is intimately related to the quality of the explanatory variables data. The gains in correctness of specification in a more complex model may be offset by the compounding of measurement errors. Using simplified models without knowing the implications of simplification constitutes a misuse of those models.
