ADVANCEMENTS IN TRAFFIC CONFLICT RESEARCH: STANDARDS AND SIMULATIONS

The observation and recording of traffic conflicts is not intended to predict the collision characteristics or to replace the analysis of collision records; rather, the analysis of traffic conflicts is intended to complement the review of the overall intersection characteristics, including geometry, capacity, and collision history. This paper summarizes the latest research being conducted in the field of traffic conflicts. It includes an overview on the recent establishment of traffic conflict standards; and a description of a traffic conflict computer simulation model using time proximity measures as a driver perceived measure of safety.
