Recent commissioning of the first Israeli Navy futuristic SAAR-5 corvettes, fitted out with the latest combat systems, has brought into focus the BARAK-1 air defence system. The BARAK-1 vertical launch unit, weighing only 500kg, accommodates eight ready-to-fire missiles, each contained within a sealed launching canister. Deck area required for the installation of this volume-optimised launcher is only 0.1m2 per missile, facilitating incorporation of the system even in a small vessel top-side arrangement. The aluminium cage structure of the launcher, containing no moving parts, can be mounted in any external configuration, or under deck whenever the ship's radar-cross section or centre of gravity are at stake.
