The article describes what is believed to be the largest ever electrical fire-damage repair task undertaken in South Africa. The work has been carried out by Trivetts Electrical Services on the coastal ro/ro ship BOUNDARY which was extensively damaged as a result of a fire which started in the generator room. All the damaged wiring was removed from the burnt-out sections while cable that could be identified was terminated into junction boxes to accommodate old and new cables being joined together. Insulation and lagging was removed from deckheads and new material applied after areas had been cleaned and painted. Every light fitting in the engine room had to be renewed and new cable trays manufactured and fitted, whereafter the task of installing new cabling could begin. The machinery and control console had also been damaged beyond economical repair and was replaced with new computer-based control, automation and monitoring systems.
