Classification societies now require steel thickness measurements to be submitted for scrutiny at least six months before a special survey is undertaken. This integral part of the planning of special surveys will provide sufficient time for the owner and the classification society to evaluate fully the results of thickness measurement. On the basis of the report repairs or reinforcement, as appropriate, can be recommended at an early date, thus providing owners with sufficient time to arrange for repairs.
