TESTS OF REFLECTIVE SIGNING

As a result of complaints received by the Department of Agriculture regarding the failure of reflective signs due to extreme temperature changes and snow burial, the Missoula Equipment Development Center and the 3M company undertook an investigation. Fifty different material combinations and application techniques were chosen for three test sites at different geographical locations in the problem areas. Sites were evaluated each spring, and again in the fall prior to snow burial. As a result of initial findings, all signs produced by the Region 3 Contract shop use the recommended materials and manufacturing techniques. The MEDC is recommending a combination of materials and application techniques for signs that suffer exposure to severe temeprature changes and snow burial, based on seven years of field and laboratory tests. A general description of the recommended manufacturing process and the materials in the 1F, 2F, 3F, 4F Series is given.
