Because there is a lack of data on the use of titanium in the offshore industries a study was initiated to identify research and development needs relevant to this application. The study established oil industry usage and opinions by means of a questionnaire, sent to over 50 oil companies operating mainly in the North Sea and the USA. The most important topics for new research were identified. The main research areas were: corrosion data; fatigue and fracture properties; stress corrosion cracking; joint processes; surface treatment; and design guidance.
