A RELIABILITY-BASED CALIBRATION STUDY FOR UPHEAVAL BUCKLING OF PIPELINES

When a pipeline is subjected to axial compressive loads it will try to expand and release the compression force. If the pipeline is restrained by a soil or rock cover forces will be established between the pipeline and the soil. Upheaval buckling will occur when the force exerted by the pipe on the soil exceeds the vertical restraint. The pipeline moves upwards leading to possible unacceptable local plastic deformations or collapse or making it vulnerable to fishing gear and other third party activities.
