A STUDY ON ROLL BEHAVIOUR OF SHIP ON ASYMMETRIC WAVES - STUDY BASED ON NUMERICAL SIMULATION METHOD

The roll behaviour of a ship in asymmetric waves is studied by solving numerically a simplified equation of roll motion. The asymmetric waves are described by using symmetric waves and a deformation function. The results are summarized as follows: 1) the maximum roll angle of the ship on the solitary and asymmetric waves increases in proportion to the numerical value of a deformation parameter AA, and the increasing ratio remarkable enlarges in the wave period more than the natural roll period of the ship; 2) the roll amplitude of the ship in regular waves is not clearly different when in asymmetric waves and symmetric waves, but where wave asymmetry is noticeable, the irregular feature appears in the roll motion; 3) the wave asymmetry seems to simulate the occurrence of chaotic roll.
