RELEVANCE OF SATELLITE DATA FOR A RELIABILITY APPROACH OF DESIGN COASTAL WAVE ESTIMATION

Design wave estimation in a reliability approach is presented. The correctness of satellite wave measurements and their operational use for the prediction of extreme design offshore waves, with an application on the Figueira da Foz area in Portugal is discussed. An operational procedure implemented for the transfer to the coast of satellite-based offshore databases, and the resulting coastal extreme wave prediction, with an application on the same location is presented. Finally, the validity of satellite data based procedures for a reliability approach of design wave estimation, for offshore needs and coastal specifications is discussed.
